Bike-in-a-bag

Taking your bike on a plane? Try this for size. It won't stop your bike getting banged about but, being visible, your steed may get better treatment from the baggage handlers.

Do the needful with the handlebars: lower and twist them around under the cross tube so that the package will get through the outsize baggage device. Remove the pedals. Protect the derailleur with a pannier on the drive side - or remove it and tape it to the chain stay. A couple of lengths of pipe insulation will absorb minor knocks on the exposed frame. Wrap up with 'Fragile' tape and you are away.

Once out of arrivals at your destination, the bag folds up and fits snugly on your back-rack. There is the added bonus as you also have a handy ground sheet protector - and a bivouac!
